Red Band Special Commissioned Piece

"Griffin" by Christen T. Holmes

The title derives from Chicago born trans activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy who participated in a wide range of activist causes throughout her lifetime, including the 1969 Stonewall Riots. While writing this piece, I knew I wanted the themes to be powerful, brave, and triumphant. Griffins are known to symbolize strength, courage, and leadership. Alongside triumph, there are also moments of sorrow. I wanted to represent what Queer/LGBTQ+ identity means to me and how it should be reflected. While we still have troubles, we should always remain proud.
